As a kid I loved drawing. During school in the car at home I turn out page after page of characters. I’m sure my parents still have them stashed away somewhere and they were always inspired in some way. By either the cartoons I was watching or of course video games that love for art is what drove me toward a career. As a game artist for a time and why to this day I still hold a game’s visuals in such high regard. I say all this because the Plucky Squire is the first game I’ve played that so effectively speaks to that childhood to that love of art and its power to inspire.
This tale takes place in a room not unlike mine as a kid a mess of scribblings books and toys thrown about. But at the center of it all a book it opens and we meet the Plucky Squire himself. Jot introduced by a narrator with a sprightly British Cadence that took me straight back to the Glory Days of Thomas the Tank Engine jot lived in the land of MOA a land of creative immediately.
It’s impossible to ignore the boundless charm on display here much of that charm a result of the art Direction. The first moment I saw jot I was like damn that’s some great character design. There’s not a single thing you’d change about him you could put him next to any number of Nintendo mascots and wouldn’t look out of place. It’s easy to see why that is the Studio’s co-founder James Turner worked as an art director for Pokémon personally responsible for the designs of some of the most recognizable characters in this medium. The Magic of 2D and 3D Worlds
You see here in the Plucky Squire is James Turner’s signature style like if you look through his Instagram which I highly recommend you do. You can see he’s been exclusively drawing cartoons in this style for many years and that footprint is apparent across the entire game. The characters, the creatures, the environments and even the UI. I particularly adore the attention to detail that’s gone into making this feel like a story book come to life from the matte surface of each page reflecting light like paper does to the very spine of the book slightly warping the art and dialogue that falls upon it.
Because this story centers around jot and his friends in their journey to save the realm from an evil Mage known as hump Grump who discovers their all characters in a book. A book all about our hero The Plucky Squire he’s envious so banishes jot from its pages so that he can plot to reclaim the spotlight each chapter. Then follows jot and his friends on an endearing little Adventure reminisces of morning cartoons often helping colorful characters with a small problem in return for an item. That might Aid in his fight against hump Grump, it never takes itself too seriously.
So, I don’t expect any especially evocative moments or meaningful lessons to these Ventures but there were enough clever self- references and fourth wall breaks to keep me engaged in the story despite clearly targeting a younger audience. There’s a personal touch here that is keenly felt in the game’s broader meta narrative but I’ll come back to that point at the end speaking of meta though the major spell has granted jot. The ability to traverse between the 2D and 3D world as you’ve likely seen from the trailers.
Puzzle Challenges and Exploration in The Plucky Squire
This is the primary hook of The Plucky Squire, it’s an action adventure that involves you leaping between these two perspectives to overcome various puzzles platforming and combat challenges. It’s channels Classics Like A Link Between Worlds and Paper Mario and this is where the other Studio founder. Jonathan bidd has clearly left his Mark as his previous game. Swords of ditto was similarly inspired by The Legend of Zelda jots got simple yet familiar controls a basic attack. A Charged spin an aerial slam and a ranged sword throw while a fairly basic move set. There’s enough there to mix up the combat where needed and I found that sword throw especially allows for at least a little skill expression. As recalling it at the right time would allow it to get some extra hits in the enemies.
You come across in the outside world are also often the same ones from the 2D book with the same attacks and animations only now rendered in 3D. It’s a cool detail and another example of how the developers have maintained that visual consistency across the board. I also appreciated the seamlessness through which you shift between these dimensions and the way that each surface’s curvature or orientation is utilized.
This is really brief section where I needed to get an item in a particular puzzle piece but the pieces were all scattered. So it took a bit of experimentation to get through then there’s the Myriad of mini games dotted along the journey from side scrolling Shooters to tile matching, to Rhythm games. They typically use just one button so aren’t as fleshed out as say the mini games in it takes two but they are effective as fun little treats to break up the game play.
Accessibility and Player-Friendly Features
Finally there’s the puzzle solving, there are some clever puzzles within the context of the book like being able to chop and change words to alter the environment. For example, if there’s an iron gate blocking the path, I can swap the word iron with broken to busted open. It’s only specific words that could be changed though and it’s always relatively obvious what needs to be done. So, don’t go into this looking for head scratching word problems like you might find in Bubba is you what adds a new dimension to this is well the other dimension. The ability to turn the pages, for example that allows you to grab words or objects from previous scenes and there’s various stamps you can collect that.
Let you interact with the inside of the book from the outside, there are some great Concepts here and they’re combined in ways that encourage you to think a little outside the box or book rather. While still being approachable for younger audiences, if you find yourself stuck at any moment. There are many accessibility options to ease up the challenge. If needed from this little wizard dude who offers in-game hint to a button that’ll skip.
Sections entirely the last few chapters, especially do leverage these mechanics in smart ways like this action sequence. I really enjoyed that had me defeating enemies in the 2D space but between waves popping out into 3D. That is the complete introduction of this game.
